Fire batts and mastic are probably the most used products to firestop a wide variety of situations.
Fire Batts are boards, usually made from a stone wool and coated in ablative coating, which are designed to prevent the passage of fire and smoke through large openings in walls and floors.
Intumescent mastic can be used around joints and gaps to create a fire resistant seal.
These are both important in compartmentalisation.
There are many different manufacturers of fire batt and mastic. It is important to be consistant, using the same manufacturer for all of the products in a given system. For example, customers should never use Protecta batts with a general purpose intumescent mastic. The correct Protecta sealant must be used in these scenarios, whether that is FR Acrylic, FR ASF, FR Graphite, or FR IPT, etc.
Fire batts usually are available in 50mm and 60mm thicknesses. The correct thickness should be chosen depending on the application. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions on the exact detail you’re trying to firestop.
