Jotun Intumescent Paints for steel are a popular choice for many of our customers, due to their excellent loadings and the wide range of coatings to cover specific situations.
It all started in 1926 with Odd Gleditsch Sr, who opened a paint supply store in Norway. Since then they have gone from strength to strength which to this day has led them to operate at a worldwide scale.
They have 37 production sites across 21 countries and are represented in over 100 countries through the ownership of numerous holding companies across the globe with a workforce of almost 10,000 employees.
With an innovative approach, Jotun now have a wide range of products for many scenarios for both internal and external settings. Some of their products have been designed to be used within a marine and tank lining environment and some of the sites that Jotun paints have been used on include the Eiffel Tower and the Petronas Towers. The longest automated metro network in the world is The Dubai Metro which has also been protected with Jotun’s premium products.
In terms of steel fire protection, Jotun’s Steelmaster intumescent paints for steel, have been tested to rigorous standards. They offer some of the best loadings on the market, particularly for RSJs and SHS columns. The main aim of structural steel protection is to maintain the integrity of the steels beams and columns that hold the building in place.
Jotun manufacture paints suitable for internal and external steels, to cater for the whole spectrum of protection times up to 120 minutes. These include both solvent and water-based products. Different paints can be applied using different methods, including by airless spray, brush and roller.
Water-based intumescent paints, including 600WF, 900WF and 1200WF, can only be used in C1 or C2 internal environments.
Jotun’s solvent-based paints, 60SB and 120SB, can be used in environments up to C4 conditions.
In C2 environments, we recommend using the Conseal TU topcoat over the intumescent paint, to provide longevity. In C3 and C4 environments, Hardtop XP is needed. These can be purchased on the website in a stock white colour. If another colour is needed, please contact us.
Intumescent paint for steel is designed to stop the steels from buckling for a certain period of time. The amount of paint required varies from steel size to steel size, so we recommend our free specification service to ensure you are protecting your steels to the correct rating.
