Intumescent fire and smoke strip, or intumescent strip are used to maintain the integrity of a fire door set during and fire. They are fitted to either the edge of the door or to the frame.
Intumescent fire and smoke strip are designed to offer up to 30 or 60 minutes fire and smoke protection, and intumescent fire only strip are designed to offer up to 30 or 60 minutes fire only protection.
When do I use an Intumescent Fire and Smoke strip instead of a Fire Only?
An Intumescent fire and smoke strip is used on FD30/S and FD60/S fire doors, whereas Intumescent fire only strip is used on FD20, FD30 and FD60 door sets.
All fire door sets will be listed as a FD20, FD30, FD30s, FS60 or FD60s, below is a breakdown of these code:
FD = Fire Door
20, 30, 60 = Fire rating
S = Smoke strip in the form of a brush, blade or bubble strip.
An FD30 = 30 minute fire door set
An FD30s = 30 minute fire door set with cold smoke protection
How does an intumescent fire and smoke strip work?
An intumescent fire and smoke strip works in two stages: firstly, the smoke strip is used to create an airtight gap around the edge of the door which will stop the passage of cold smoke around the head and edge of the door. Secondly the intumescent material within the strip will start to intumesce (expand) when it reaches a high enough temperature and will fill the gap between the door and the frame stopping the spread of fire through the gaps at the top and sides of fire doors.
