Pipe Collars

Pipe collars are a popular way for firestopping around where pipes penetrate through fire compartment walls and floors.

They are comprised of a steel outer case, which is filled with intumescent material. The intumescent inside the collar expands when exposed to heat from a fire, to seal off the area the melting pipe leaves. This seal is a barrier to both fire and smoke and can last a different amount of time, dependent on the size of the pipe, its materials and many other factors.

Pipe collars can also be used around cables and cable bundles for the same purpose.

It is important to follow the manufacturers’ installation instructions when using these products, to make sure that the system is compliant and in line with the product fire testing.

Should I use a Pipe Wrap or a Pipe Collar?
Pipe wraps are sometimes a more economical way of firesealing around pipes, although they are often more difficult to install. For one-off jobs using pipe collars is usually a more popular way of firesealing pipes.

Pipe collars are also more widely fire tested. The Protecta FR Collars can be used in timber floors, whereas their FR pipe wraps haven’t been, for example.

Always ensure that you use an appropriate fire tested fire sealing method.

How do you Install Pipe Collars Around Pipes?

Always follow the manufacturer’s detailed instructions, but as a general rule of thumb, choose a pipe collar which is either the same diameter to the pipe you’re sealing, or slightly oversized. For example, you can fit a 40mm pipe collar around a 35mm diameter pipe.

Make sure that it is securely fixed to the penetration entry point using all of the fixings on the collar.
